Understanding the Winter Fuel Payment: Eligibility and How to Claim (2025/26)

At Oakworth , we aim to keep our clients informed about financial matters that may impact their well-being. One such area is the Winter Fuel Payment, a government initiative designed to help eligible individuals with heating costs during the colder months.

What Is the Winter Fuel Payment?

The Winter Fuel Payment is a tax-free annual payment provided by the UK government to assist eligible individuals with their winter heating bills. Depending on personal circumstances, payments range between £200 and £300.

Recent Changes to Eligibility

As of the 2025/26 winter season, the eligibility criteria for the Winter Fuel Payment have been revised:

  • Age Requirement: You must have been born on or before 21 September 1959.

  • Residency: You must reside in England, Wales, or Northern Ireland during the qualifying week.

  • Benefit Entitlement: You must be receiving one of the following means-tested benefits:

    • Pension Credit

    • Universal Credit

    • Income Support

    • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)

    • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)

These changes mean that individuals who do not receive one of these qualifying benefits are no longer eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment. Previously, the payment was more widely available to those above the State Pension age.

How to Claim

  • Automatic Payments: If you’re already receiving one of the qualifying benefits, the Winter Fuel Payment should be made automatically. You should receive a letter in October or November detailing the amount and payment date.

  • New Claimants: If you believe you’re eligible but are not currently receiving a qualifying benefit, you should apply for that benefit as soon as possible. Once your claim is approved, the Winter Fuel Payment will be processed automatically.

  • Living Abroad: If you live abroad, you may still be eligible, but you’ll need to make a claim. Eligibility depends on having a genuine and sufficient link to the UK, such as having lived or worked in the UK or having family in the UK.

Important Dates

  • Qualifying Week: The qualifying week for the 2025/26 Winter Fuel Payment is 15–21 September 2025.

  • Payment Period: Payments are typically made during November and December.
