When it comes to investing your money, there’s a wide range of options you can explore. But which option (or options) are the right one for you depends on your current circumstances.

Let’s break down some of the investment options potentially available to you.

    ISA’s
ISA’s (Individual Savings Accounts) are tax efficient savings accounts that enable you to earn interest or grow your investment without paying tax on it. They shield your returns from both income tax and capital gains tax. It’s important to note they have a set annual limit for how much money you can put into them (for example, it will be £20,000 during the 2025/26 tax year).

    Pensions
Personal pensions are one of the most tax-efficient ways to save money for your future. Like all investments, the longer you have your funds in the ‘pot’ so to speak, the more chance it has to grow. But it’s also possible you may get less back than you put in due to the way investments can rise and fall. There are a variety of pensions to choose from and we’ll help you to select the right one for your needs.

    Bonds
When Governments or corporations want to borrow money, they issue ‘bonds’ that investors can purchase. As a fixed income security, bonds pay the investor a regular interest payment until they reach their maturity date. At this point the borrower pays the investor their initial payment back and the interest payments cease.

    Stocks
Stocks are a way to invest in a company and actually gain a ‘share’ of the business itself. Investors often use both bonds and stocks to balance the risk and reward nature of their investment portfolio. Bonds tend to be a safer, more predictable option, but stocks can potentially have a higher return. So if you have a higher risk tolerance, stocks may be the better option.

    Investment Trusts
These are actually publicly limited companies that combine and pool together various investors’ funds that are then used to invest in a diverse portfolio of assets or other businesses themselves. Shares are then offered that can be traded on the stock exchange, just like regular stocks. It’s managed by a team of professionals and features an independent board that ensures managers always act in the interest of the investors.

    Ethical Investments
If you have any ongoing interests that you’ve always wanted to invest money into to help the cause, an ethical investment may be a great choice. An investment can technically be classed as an ethical investment when you choose to invest in it due to their moral behaviour and not just for financial gain. However, you’ll have to prove your ethical investment is ethical to any regulatory bodies.

We’re all about offering sound, tailored, trustworthy financial advice here at Oakworth. The last thing we want to do is suggest to you a ‘poor’ investment. That’s why we take the time to sit down and understand your specific situation and requirements.

We’ll get to know you as a person, understand your financial goals, your attitude to ‘risk’ when it comes to investments and the return timescale you’re looking for. With all that considered, we’ll suggest investment opportunities that align with what you’re looking for.

For example, if you prefer ethical investments, we’ll focus on Investment Funds aligned with ESG principles. However, if your priority is retirement income to fund your desired lifestyle, we’ll build a plan around stability and tax efficiency.

Unfortunately, we can never make any guarantees regarding your money as returns are never really guaranteed. However, we conduct extensive research and fully understand your circumstances and goals before creating an investment plan for you.

We’d never recommend an investment option that’s too risky or the odds are stacked against you. Of course we’ll take into account your risk tolerance and ensure you fully understand any investment options that lean towards the risky side before recommending them to you.

Calculating your Return on Investment (ROI) is important to understand whether the investment you’re potentially planning to make is a sound one or not.

To work out your potential ROI you’ll want to compare the gain or loss to the cost. There’s two ways you can do this.

For the first method you’ll want to divide the Net Return on Investment by the Cost of The Investment and then times it by 100. That will give you your ROI.

Alternatively, you could subtract the Initial Value of Investment from the Final Value of Investment, then divide that by the Cost of Investment before multiplying that by 100 to discover your Return on Investment.

We’ll help you to understand your potential and actual ROI during your investment journey and we’ll constantly monitor your investment portfolio to ensure it’s on track and you’re kept in the loop.
